Oh contraire!

"I subscribe to several free newsletters on eLearning, but yours is the only one that regularly grabs my attention. And your contrarian view is the best thing about it. Keep up the good work!"

HIGHLIGHTS
* New book: Advertraining by Jim Hassett, Ph.D.
* New book: Stuff Happens by John Alston and Lloyd Thaxton
* Saba releases SCORM Detective

One of the more frequent e-mail requests I get is, "Tell us what you are reading." I typically read about 50 books a year,
obviously not all learning related. One of the surprising (and only) perks of publishing this e-zine is that authors and publishers just send me books for free! As much as I like keeping my Amazon.com bill low, don't worry, if a book stinks I'll let you know.

Advertraining: 35 Ways to Increase Student Enthusiasm
by James Hassett, Ph.D.

Jim's book is a welcome addition to the limited material currently available on the internal marketing of training and education. Jim's breezy style and humor create 35 very readable chapters. Each explains a specific marketing concept, followed by advice for "applying the principle." My favorite principles include:

  • Number 1: Appeal to self-interest
  • Number 5: Use proven headline techniques
  • Number 26: Tell a story
  • Number 35: Don't stop

Along the way I also learned the answers to:
- "Why is Santa's suit red?"
- "Who claims that more than 5% of their customers are tattooed with the company name?"

Advertraining has not yet been published which is a bonus for you -- it's currently available as an e-book (PDF file) at Amazon for $4.95. (Hard copy in August for $19):

Stuff Happens (and then you fix it!): 9 Reality Rules to Steer Your Life Back in the Right Direction
by John Alston and Lloyd Thaxton

This book was a gift that I really enjoyed (told you not all my reading was e-learning related). I have to admit I'm a sucker for good personal improvement and personal-business books. Stuff Happens is a simple guide for getting through tough times - whether losing your job, losing a deal, or just a dead car battery. My favorite rules were:

  • Rule #3: Get Knowledge
Why do people spend more time researching and preparing for their vacations than they do their lives and careers?
  • Rule #8: Make it 100% OK to Accept Criticism
Don't know about you, but the only time I grow is when I hear something that's not exactly a compliment.

Saba Releases SCORM Detective

Kudo's to Saba for releasing (for free) a utility they developed internally. SCORM Detective is a Flash-based program for testing learning management systems, or for debugging your e-learning content when you're trying to get it working with a SCORM compliant LMS.
