Why University of Phoenix Online is Printing Money

In the early 1900's the International Correspondence School made a fortune from this one ad and headline. It is considered by many to be the best marketing headline ever written. While a bit crude and direct by today's standards, the same basic "buying psychology" is what's behind the boom in distance learning -- especially around accredited degree programs.

"How To" Videos Coming to a Phone Near You

Last month I wrote an article on the need for "how to" videos now that we live in a broadband world and increasingly wireless world. Then I heard about a new service from Verizon called V Cast and got a direct mail piece for Sprint PCS Vision. Wireless, streaming video to your phone... most clips under 2 minutes, so they are positioning for movie trailers, news clips, etc. Again, I think they're missing a massive "how to" market.

Nels Agerbo over at Chalk Media let me know that they are hot on the trail of this goal. Check out their video clip explaining the difference between LCD and Plasma TVs for Sony. Also got a note from Dan O'Brien showing some short clips on "how to strap a pallet" in under a minute. Cool!

What if Every Kid Had a Computer? $100 each...

I've been a big proponent of every school kid getting a laptop by 5th grade and hope to write a piece for Seth Godin's ChangeThis folks soon . I was thrilled to see the current Wired magazine have a piece by Joseph Jacobson at the MIT Media Lab talking about the benefits of 1-kid-1-computer. He points out that you could get laptop down to $100 each by volume purchases (think large governments) and some promising new technology. No online article yet, so you'll have to splurge and buy the paper copy.

Why Is Good Training So Hard to Come By?!?!

I'm echo blogging elearningpost on this pointer to a NY Times article on "Computer Tutorials on a Disc." They only review four programs but the results are glum. The article concludes with "it's clear that the potential for video computer training has yet to be fully tapped. The world waits for discs as lavishly produced as the Net-Campus course, as approachable as Windows Academy's, as inexpensive as Master ASAP's, and as effectively marketed as Video Professor's. Until then, there's always the Help menu."

Early Adopters... VOIP Broadband Phones

I probably have a few more early adopters running around my office than normal, but when Kathryn asks for Vonage opinions and Sang raves about his new Lingo service I think we're moving quickly from early adopters to a tipping point. 50% of homes in US have broadband installed and countries like South Korea and Canada are upwards of 70%. Why not save a ton of money and make calls over the Internet. Tough time to be a traditional phone company.
